Definitions of Terms
Throughout this help module, standard terms are used when referring to specific business process actors or particular eAIM system components (such as screens and display elements, including data fields and controls, which collectively comprise the eAIM system’s “user interface”). The following content describes the use of specific terms (terms used interchangeably are noted where applicable, and other terminology list items referred to within definitions are formatted with initial capitals):
Air Carrier and Operator: Air Carrier and Operator are used interchangeably to represent a company providing air carrier and/or air taxi service.
Representative or Representative user: A person who performs official actions on behalf of a company or organization as a recognized agent. Within eAIM, these include air carrier representatives, insurance company representatives, and insurance broker representatives.
Column: A vertical area displaying data. Columns and Rows collectively make up a Grid control or List.
Command Button: A control displayed as a push-button allowing the user to perform an associated action or command.
Conditional, Conditional button: A Command Button allowing the user to apply a logical operator to a Data Field.
Control: A shape displayed on the screen allowing the user to select commands or data values or to perform data entry.
Detail screen: A Detail screen is used to describe a screen that is displayed as the result of an action performed on a main screen and occupies the entire browser window. Sometimes referred to a “sub-screen” or “child screen”, the Detail screen is commonly accessed by selecting a link or button on a main or ”parent” screen.
Dialog box, Message box, and Window: These terms are used to describe interactive displays that appear in front of the current application screen displayed within the browser window.
eAIM URL link: The eAIM system’s Universal Resource Locator (URL) hypertext link, https://eaim.faa.gov.
Effective Date: (1) Effective date of the air taxi registration, or (2) effective date of the insurance policy or policies named in the certificate of insurance. Per 14 CFR (§ 298.22), the effective date of the air taxi registration shall not be earlier than the effective date of the insurance policy or policies named in the certificate of insurance filed by the carrier (under § 298.21(c)(2)).
“External” users and “Internal” users: External users include industry users who represent companies in the air carrier or insurance industries. Internal users include FAA users (FAA Insurance Analysts or the eAIM System Administrator).
Field, Data Field: A control used to accept keyboard entry of text or numeric data.
Filing grid: A List grid containing rows, with each Row representing a submitted filing.
Filter: Applying example data during a search to reduce the results displayed in the List or Grid.
Forms: OST Forms with processes automated by eAIM. Supported forms include OST Form 4507, “Air Taxi Operator Registration and Amendments under Part 298 of the Regulations of the Department of Transportation”, OST Form 6410, “U.S. Air Carriers Certificate of Insurance”, and OST Form 6411, “Foreign Air Carriers Certificate of Insurance”.
Grid, Grid control: A table-like control used to display Rows of data arranged within Columns.
Header: (1) The top area/row(s) of a Grid or List which displays Column name text and often Search fields/controls. (2) The top area of a screen displaying read-only identifying information as a group of subordinate data items.
Industry users: Industry users is a general term applied to eAIM system users in either the air carrier or insurance industries (i.e., users who are external to the FAA) having eAIM Air Carrier Representative, Insurance Company Representative, or Insurance Broker Representative roles.
List grid: The terms List grid and Grid are used throughout the user guide to refer to a display element that presents data within a table-like display with rows and columns.
List, List grid: A Grid control containing Rows, with each Row representing a data item.
Mouse-over: Holding or hovering your computer’s mouse cursor over a displayed menu title or field/control.
Page Navigation control(s): One or a group of special Controls used to move up or down through List or Grid pages.
Page: The area of a List or Grid that is displayed on the screen at one time.
Row: A horizontal area displaying data. Columns and Rows collectively make up a Grid or List.
Screen and Page: Screen and Page are used interchangeably when referring to a single display presented within the application’s browser window.
Scroll Bar (Horizontal or Vertical): A control allowing the user to change the Rows or Columns displayed within a screen’s List or Grid Page. A Vertical Scroll Bar is used to move up and down within a List or Grid. A Horizontal Scroll Bar is used to move left and right within a List or Grid.
Search fields/controls: Data fields used to enter example characters used to filter the contents of a Grid or List, and specialized command buttons attached to search fields to apply conditionals to or clear the search data.
System and Application: System and Application are used interchangeably when referring to the eAIM information technology (IT)-based solution.
Tab Bar: A persistently displayed area of the screen displaying a row of Screen Tabs.
Tab, Screen Tab: A persistently displayed area of the screen presented as a protrusion which, when selected/clicked, allows an attached Tabbed Screen Area to be displayed on the screen.
Tabbed Screen Area: The screen area attached to a Tab and displayed when the Tab is clicked.
User Role: The eAIM system user type. eAIM employs access and permission controls that are based on the user role assigned to each user account. User roles currently include: FAA Insurance Analyst and eAIM System Administrator.
